Mount
Sunflower By Lewis Armstrong |
The highest point in Kansas, at 4,039 feet above sea level.
But dash any idea that it is a mountian.
It is a gentle rise in the landscape, surrounded by
farms and ranches and located in the middle of a pasture.
Look to the west and view a little of the landscape of southeastern
Colorado.
On March 7, 2005, about 1:30 p.m., made a visited Mount Sunflower. Notice the mail box for visitors to sign-in. Also note the sunflower made with railway spikes. | The rock in the center counts with the elevation, but you cannot scale the peak. The fence around the marker is to keep cattle from entering the memorial. | Nearby is a covered picnic table for those prepared to dine-out. It is also surrounded by a fence with a gate to enter the facility. |
On the west side of the memorial area is a special monument to a family who must have homesteaded in the area. (Forten) Harold Homesteaded in Wallace County, 1906, In loving Memory: Your Children: Arthur, Ralph, Clarence, Irene, Russell, Raymond, Edith, Ruth, Warren, Pauline I V |

A view from the West toward the monument with Linda waving from our van window. The view to the west looks into Colorado less than halfway to the horizon. It is considered one of the lower areas in Colorado. Page Created 3-11-05
